An Introduction to RSS for the Veterinarian PDF

In the old days of the web, you got your online information by going to a website…waiting for a page to load…and then reading about whatever you were looking for. That was time consuming and you had to remember to visit each individual site to check and see if anything changed on the website.

The rules have changed!

The “new web” delivers content directly to your computer screen with a tool called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Now, instead of having to visit 14 different places to get your weather, news, entertainment, and importantly veterinary medicine updates you just open an RSS news reader and everything arranged for you when you open up your new reader. Whenever one of your selected websites has an update, it is delivered to you in real time.

Most websites, news organizations, hobby groups, blogs, and online forums now have an RSS feed to keep you updated. You have probably seen the little Image icon. This means that your website has an RSS feed that you can subscribe to. Usually, you can click on the RSS icon and you will be taken to a page. The URL at the top of the page is the URL for the RSS feed.

Getting Started with RSS:

  • Step 1: Chose an RSS reader. There are many dedicated RSS applications that you can use to view your RSS feeds. I find that my customized google personalized home page works the best for me.

  • Step 2: Load the RSS feel URL into your reader tool: all you do is cut and paste the ULR at the top of the screen (after you click on the feed icon or link) into the reader of your choice and you are ready to go.

...And a few examples geared to veterinary radiology to get you started:

Animal Insides – all new updates to the Vendor Press Releases, SHOWDOWN, and Digital Imaging Tutorials sections of Animal Insides are delivered directly to you as soon as they are updates. Image link to the feed

Veterinary Radiology – a fantastic blog by Allison Zwingenberger DVM DACVR updating you with case of the day, radiology journal rounds etc.Image link to the feed

Radpod.org; Radiology picture of the day. A human side POD site Image link to the feed

Auntminnie.com Headlines: Headlines from the human radiology site www.auntminnie.com Image link to the feed
