The Handbook of Veterinary Contrast Radiography

Finally - a quick reference with everything you need to know about radiographic contrast procedures

By Seth Wallack DVM DACVR

Image The Handbook of Veterinary Contrast Radiography is a compilation of important information previously scattered throughout the literature on veterinary contrast radiography. The primary goal of the textbook is to guide practitioners and technicians in choosing and performing various contras radiographic examinations. The author has successfully provided a concise reference for use in a number of contrast techniques for small, large, and exotic animals.

The contrast procedures outlined in the text include, but are not limited, to arthrography, esophagography, evaluations of the proximal portions of the gastrointestinal tract, myelography, excretory urography, and cystography. Each section includes indications, contraindications, acceptable sedation, and  proper examination protocol. A number of the procedures outlined address dogs and cats but also include protocols for a myriad of species, including \ small exotic animals (e.g.. chinchillas, ferrets, rabbits, and hamsters), reptiles, birds, foals, and sheep.

The book begins with a thorough introduction to barium and iodinated contrast media. The remainder of the book describes how to obtain diagnostic contrast images with step by step instructions and includes dosages. A partial list of studies included in this book are:

  • Esophagram
  • IVP
  • Upper GI series
  • Portography
  • Cystography
  • Urethrogram
  • Contrast procedures in exotic species

Every practice should have a book like this as part of their library.
